The Brando

Somewhere beyond Tahiti, Tetiaroa is a world of its own. Twelve motu scattered around a lagoon, once a retreat for Tahitian royalty and, from the 1960s onwards, Marlon Brando’s private retreat. He discovered the atoll while filming Mutiny on the Bounty, and spent years creating a place that could welcome travellers without compromising the landscape that drew him there in the first place. The Brando finally opened in 2014, with 35 villas on Onetahi. The villas are deliberately low-key, tucked between the vegetation and the beach, with timber, natural materials and private pools opening onto the lagoon. Life here is largely dictated by the atoll itself; kayaking through the lagoon, exploring the reef, watching turtles and seabirds, or joining the Tetiaroa Society to learn about the conservation work taking place across the islands. Food follows the same Polynesian thread. Les Mutinés brings local flavours together with French technique beneath its great inverted boat hull, while Bob’s Bar occupies the very spot where Brando used to come for his evening drink.
