The Savoy

On the Strand, the Savoy still holds something of the theatre conceived for Gilbert and Sullivan's operas; the Thames has become its other stage. Claude Monet painted the Thames from the river-facing rooms; it flows on still, between Westminster and the Embankment. Each month, the house archivist tells the story of the place on an in-depth tour, before a glass at the American Bar. Under the Gallery's glass roof, warm scones, piano and peach Melba give the afternoon its cheerful notes. Further on, at the Savoy Grill, Gordon Ramsay keeps an eye on the classics, while at the River Restaurant, fish and shellfish remind you that the sea is not so far away.
