Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast

Legend says that an 11th-century family of seafarers built this palace. On discovering it a millennium later, this story feels immediately true, so perfectly is it designed for a comfortable return to port. The Amalfi air is certainly conducive to creativity; Richard Wagner stayed in Ravello, just below, and drew inspiration for his Parsifal from the hanging gardens. Caruso has lost none of its character, nestled amongst an exhilarating vista of hills, sky, vegetation and sea, to serve as a starting point for local explorations. Visit Procida and Pompeii, walk up the Path of the Gods, discover Da Nonno and its pizzas, or simply honour the place’s original purpose, and while away the day floating in the pool until it’s time to dine under the stars. Legends are sometimes lived out in the present.
