Fasano Rio

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Fasano Rio

Fasano Rio is very much a product of its surroundings: the easy glamour of Ipanema, the spirit of Bossa Nova and the confidence of Brazilian modernism, all filtered through Philippe Starck’s eye. The beach is right outside, but Rio follows you in. Dark woods, palms and broad-leaved plants set the tone from the lobby onwards, while the suites mix mid-century pieces with high ceilings, generous proportions and views across either the city or the Atlantic. There is something wonderfully unforced about it -- more elegant Brazilian home than conventional hotel. Up on the eighth floor, the rooftop takes things a little further. Hidden among palms and greenery, the pool seems to hover above Ipanema, with the Atlantic stretching out below and the skyline rising all around it: Corcovado, Sugarloaf and the mountains beyond. It is the sort of place where an afternoon can easily disappear. At Gero Rio, the Fasano family's Italian roots come through on the plate, from handmade pasta to golden potato gnocchi with calamari and scallops. Later, the spa offers a quieter change of pace, with essential-oil treatments and rituals designed to leave both body and mind feeling properly reset.
