Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid

In Madrid, you step out of the Prado and make your way to the Ritz through the Retiro groves. The Palm Court glass roof shelters the hotel's inner courtyard, with its Iberian take on tea time and its soft, unshowy Belle Époque atmosphere. After the Reina Sofía museum, the century-old shops: Seseña still cuts capes, San Ginés serves chocolate with churros. Come evening, chef Quique Dacosta runs Deessa, and the Pictura bar mixes cocktails with portraits of Spanish masters. In 1916, Mata Hari checked in under the name Condesa Masslov: the room still bears the trace, by its name. After a row around the Estanque Grande, you head back to the Palm Court to catch the last of the daylight.
