Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona

On Passeig de Gràcia, the Mandarin Oriental is housed in the former headquarters of the Banco Hispano Americano, a 1950s bank building whose architectural language is subtly evoked throughout, right down to the Banker’s Bar. The hotel’s culinary offering is Catalan and the kitchen is a family affair: at Moments, Carme Ruscalleda and her son Raül Balam showcase the region’s cuisine, from mint-flavoured flaó to llorito salad. Pastry chef Josep Esturi has created the ‘Gaudí’, a mató topped with a sugar cobblestone, in the year that Barcelona marks the centenary of the architect’s death.
