Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara

Deep in the Rub’ al Khali, the world’s largest expanse of sand, Qasr Al Sarab rises from the dunes looking improbably like a mirage. Its towers, courtyards, fountains and crenellated walls give it the air of a desert citadel, half imagined, half ancient . Beyond it, nothing but the great red dunes of the Empty Quarter. The desert is never far from suites, as terraces and balconies look straight across the sands, while the Pool Villas have the rare feeling of houses set in the middle of the landscape, with dunes in place of a garden. There is no shortage of ways to spend an evening. Al Waha brings the flavours of the Middle East to the table; Ghadeer keeps things by the pool, while Suhail sits high above the dunes, particularly beautiful as the sun begins to set. For something more memorable, dinner can be set up in the desert itself, with the landscape providing the only backdrop. Most of the day belongs outside: crossing the dunes by camel or 4x4, cycling through the sand, or simply walking out at sunset. Later, the Anantara Spa offers a gentler return indoors, with a Moroccan hammam and treatments drawing on desert rose and other traditions of the region.
