Inside, the sense of grandeur is tempered by drapery, matte white tones, and dark wood, while French doors open onto frangipani gardens flanked by two pools inspired by those at the Royal Palace. On the upper floors, ceilings painted by royal artists, parquet flooring, and marble bathrooms retain the lustre of days gone by, while suites still bear the names of illustrious guests ranging from Jackie Kennedy to Charles de Gaulle. At Le Royal, recipes sourced directly from the Palace kitchens are enjoyed beneath painted ceilings before guests move on to the Elephant Bar, where the Femme Fatale—created for Jackie Kennedy during her visit to Phnom Penh—blends champagne, cognac, and wild strawberries.
