Royal Mansour Marrakech

Behind the Marrakech ramparts, a door opens onto 53 riads, linked by passages dotted with pools and fountains. You eat your way through it like you would a medina, courtyard to courtyard. At La Grande Table Marocaine and La Grande Brasserie, Hélène Darroze keeps the menu moving with the local repertoire; Karim Ben Baba turns out a mean m'rouzia — lamb with almonds and saffron. Sesamo ships Italy into neo-Venetian palaces, while at Le Jardin, the pergolas shelter Asian and Mediterranean kitchens. The garden throws together olive trees, date palms and streams borrowed from the Agdal. Further on, a hammam, floral water mists and a heated pool under the orangery glass roof invite you to slow down after the day's wandering. Come evening, a cedar log burns behind the mashrabiyas; you head back to your riad with the smell of cedar still lingering.
