Near Lamego, Six Senses Douro Valley occupies a riverside spot, facing the schist terraces that support the Douro’s vineyards. A vintage boat departs from the resort’s jetty and travels upriver between the hillsides. After a 20-minute walk, the owner of Mourão, a neighbouring estate, offers a tasting of very old wines straight from the cask. You can also tread the grapes yourself, and learn how to paint azulejos in a workshop. José Gomes cooks with Douro tomatoes and Bísaro pork, whilst the Cozinha do Douro preserves the regional repertoire by the wood-fired oven at Vale Abraão.
