The Whitby Hotel

Just steps from Central Park, The Whitby brings a touch of whimsy to Midtown that feels quite unusual. It’s the vision of Kit Kemp, who chose to counter the neighborhood's austerity with color, patterns, and a certain irreverence. Behind its limestone facade and large steel windows, the suites are like miniature sets where textiles, artwork, and antique trinkets are displayed side by side. At the Whitby Bar, 52 baskets from England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland hang above the counter, while in the Orangery, 40 porcelain pieces by Martha Freud feature hand-engraved architectural silhouettes of New York. The details are full of surprises, like the rainbow weaving by Hermione Skye which watches over the lobby, while some of the sitting rooms look as though an English cottage has somehow found its way to Manhattan.
