The Royal Navy chose English Harbour because the anchorage, narrow and ringed by hills, kept its ships safe from hurricanes. The dockyard has kept its brick and stone buildings around the basin; of the old boat house and sail loft, only a double row of pillars remains, standing roofless. Inland, sugar mill towers, stripped of their sails, dot the fields. Fig Tree Drive runs through a forest of mango and banana. On the windward coast, the Atlantic passes beneath the limestone arch of Devil's Bridge and bursts up in spray through the cracks.
