Hotel Sacher Salzburg
Salzburg, Austria
Salzburg took the stone for its cathedral from the Mönchsberg, and the quarry was put to use a second time: three tiers of arcades were cut into its conglomerate wall, from which the court watched displays of horsemanship; the festival plays there in summer. Close by, the prince-archbishops' horses were washed in a pool ringed with frescoes of other horses, rearing. Beneath the mountain, the Almkanal carries water from the Königsseeache through a tunnel to the old town, and is drained every September for upkeep. The cathedral's façade, for its part, is of Untersberg marble; near the entrance, graffiti centuries old can still be made out.
