Foz do Iguacu, Brazil
The Iguaçu meets the Paraná at a point where each bank has raised an obelisk in the colours of its flag: green and yellow on the Brazilian side, sky blue and white in Argentina, red, white and blue in Paraguay. Upstream, the river, whose name means great water in Guarani, drops over basalt steps to the Devil's Throat, where the spray never quite settles. The earth around is red. At dusk, great dusky swifts fly through the curtain of water to reach their nests of moss, pressed to the wet basalt behind the falls.
