Before the empress imposed house numbers, a house on Nerudova Street was known by the sign carved or painted on its façade: the Three Violins, the Two Suns, the Green Crayfish. Further down, Charles Bridge sets its sandstone arches across the Vltava, beneath a double row of Baroque statues blackened by time. On Jungmann Square stands a street lamp cut into facets: for a time, Prague built in the Cubist manner, down to its lamp posts.
