A saguaro takes a human lifetime to grow its first arm. Arizona keeps to that pace. The Sonoran Desert raises thousands of them around Tucson, where adobe houses hold the morning's coolness until evening. In Paradise Valley, the houses keep low and take the colour of the rock, as Frank Lloyd Wright intended at Taliesin West, set directly on the Scottsdale desert. To the north, the plateau opens all at once onto the Grand Canyon, watched at length without one ever quite taking its measure. It hardly rains, and the cacti flower in April.
