Washington hotels collection
Dry Falls is a waterfall without water: a horseshoe of basalt cliff cut at the end of the Ice Age by floods from a glacial lake whose ice dam had given way, and now fed by nothing at all. This dry Washington carries on into the Palouse, hills of wind-blown loess where the wheat follows every swell. On the far side of the Cascades, in the Hoh valley, rain is the rule, and the maples vanish under cloaks of moss. At the foot of Mount St Helens, Spirit Lake still carries a raft of trunks felled by the eruption, which drifts wherever the wind sends it.
