Kalesma
Aleomandra, Greece
Mandra, in Greek, means a shepherds' enclosure, and Aleomandra, a low point on the coast of Mykonos, keeps the word in its ending. The island's granite surfaces here in boulders polished by the wind; sheltered from the meltemi, the water stays calm at the foot of the rocks. Dry-stone walls divide the fields as far as limewashed chapels. Each opens above all on its saint's day, when the family that keeps it invites the neighbourhood.
