Porto Heli, Greece
Aleppo pines come down to the rocks around Porto Heli, in a bay closed enough to pass for a lake. On its edge, refugees from Tiryns enlarged Halieis, a city later abandoned; the sea, which has risen since, covers the foot of its walls, the temple of Apollo and its stadium, which one swims over. Opposite Koilada, the people of the Franchthi cave were already working obsidian in the Palaeolithic, a stone foreign to this shore: it was fetched from Milos, by sea.
