Oia, Greece
Santorini is what remains of a volcano. The cliff of the caldera drops straight into a sea so deep it turns black, and the villages cling to the very top, white, like snow that never melted. Oia faces the sunset, Fira the bay, Pyrgos, inland, its vines pruned into baskets close to the ground to withstand the wind. The soil is ash, the beaches are black or red, and beneath the ash of Akrotiri sleeps an ancient town whose frescoes are still fresh. One comes for the evening light; one stays for the morning silence, when the stairways are empty.
