Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace
Budapest, Hungary
Pécs supplied Budapest with its glazed roofs: the tiles of the Matthias Church, like those with which Lechner covered the Museum of Applied Arts, came out of its kilns, and frost does not crack them. At the Rudas Baths, beneath an Ottoman dome pierced with coloured glass, hot water rises from the rock into an octagonal pool. On the other bank, an underground line runs beneath Andrássy Avenue, a few steps below the pavement. Beneath the Buda Hills, the same hot water has hollowed caves out of the limestone and lined them with crystals, and the forest covers them without letting anything show.
