Ananda In The Himalayas
India
The Ganges is born in Uttarakhand, in a glacier, and comes down to Rishikesh still cold and green, between ashrams and suspension bridges. The state is a staircase of hills: the orchards and lake of Nainital, the deodar cedars of Binsar, the ridges of Kumaon from which, on a clear day, the white line of the great peaks can be seen. Lower down, the forest of Corbett keeps its tigers and elephants in the tall grass. The villages are of grey stone and carved wood, the temples too, and nights at this altitude are spent by a fire.
