Amanbagh
Ajabgarh, India
Ajab Singh left his name to the town and his fort to the spur above it, in a fold of the Aravallis. The lower town keeps its ramparts and its ruined havelis; further on, deserted Bhangarh lines its bazaar street with roofless stone shops. The lake of Somsagar, laid out at the time of a visit by Akbar, is reached on foot through a gorge where blocks of marble have been polished by generations of bare feet and hooves.
