Amankila
Manggis, Indonesia
Warp and weft, for a geringsing from Tenganan, are dyed separately, each tied to the pattern, and then comes the waiting: it takes years before they meet on the loom. The village, walled in, lines up its houses along stone-paved avenues that rise in steps, and palm-leaf lontar is still incised there with a stylus. Below, the coast of Manggis opens onto the Lombok Strait, with Padangbai as its port. At Candidasa, a lotus pond runs beside the road, facing the sea, at the foot of the temple hill.
