Jerusalem, Israel
White at noon, pink then golden at sunset, Jerusalem stone is a pale limestone, and the city, old and new alike, is dressed in it almost entirely. In the Old City, the lanes step down beneath stone vaults; above them, the Dome of the Rock sets its gold on the esplanade, facing the Mount of Olives. To the west, Ein Karem terraces its houses and bell towers around a spring. At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, daylight falls from the oculus of the rotunda onto the marble Aedicule, where each Church tends its own lamps.
