Borgo Santo Pietro
Palazzetto, Italy
Grass grows in the nave of San Galgano: a commendatory abbot once sold the lead from the roof, and the vault eventually gave way. The walls of brick and travertine now cut shapes out of the sky over the Val di Merse. Not far off, Palazzetto, a hamlet of Chiusdino, lies among holm oaks and chestnuts. On the hill of Montesiepi, a rotunda winds rings of terracotta and white stone beneath its dome. Galgano, a knight born in Chiusdino, drove his sword into the rock there to make a cross; the hilt still shows, under a transparent cover.
