Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino
Portofino, Italy
From Santa Margherita, the road hugs the coast as far as Portofino and stops short a few steps from the piazzetta, at the head of the harbour. A path climbs to the church of San Giorgio, then to Castello Brown, and carries on beneath pines and holm oaks to the lighthouse on the point. On the far side of the headland, made of a conglomerate of cemented pebbles, the abbey of San Fruttuoso holds the back of a cove that no road reaches. In the bay, underwater, a bronze Christ raises his arms towards the surface.
