Gunner's Quoin takes its name from its profile, that of the wedge once slipped beneath a cannon to set its aim; the French name, Coin de Mire, says the same. This rock of tuff and basalt rises opposite Cap Malheureux, the point where Mauritius comes to an end. Beyond it, Round Island shelters boas long gone from the main island. Serpent Island, its neighbour, is a dome of rock on a round base, covered entirely by seabirds.
