Chocholá, Mexico
Chocholá has lent its name to a family of Maya vessels, cylinders of brown or grey clay carved with glyphs and dignitaries before firing: they were said to come from here, and the name stuck. In Maya the word means brackish water, the water of a limestone subsoil into which the sea seeps far inland. The village stretches along the old Camino Real, the road from Mérida to Campeche. A closed cenote is reached by a stairway cut into the rock. All around, the henequen fields have gone back to scrub, and the haciendas that lived off them raise their brick chimneys above the trees.
