La Cruz de Huanacaxtle takes its name from a cross carved, so it is said, from the wood of a huanacaxtle, a great tree known elsewhere as parota. The fishing village looks out over the Bay of Banderas, which Punta de Mita closes with a low point. Offshore, the Marietas Islands, volcanic rocks the swell has pierced with arches and caves, shelter the nests of blue-footed boobies, and are now a national park. In the dry season, the huanacaxtles shed their leaves, and their brown pods, curled like ears, litter the paths.
