Las Casitas, A Belmond Hotel, Colca Canyon
Yanque, Peru
The Collaguas traced their origin to a volcano, Collaguata, and their hat echoes its outline. In Yanque, in the upper Colca Valley, the women still wear theirs white and stiff-brimmed, while the Cabanas, downstream, embroider theirs with flowers. On the square, the church of the Immaculate Conception raises a façade of sillar, a pale volcanic stone, where saints crowd between the columns. For the wititi, the valley's courtship dance, the young men wear embroidered skirts as well; that, it is said, was how they once slipped past the girl's parents.
