Miraflores Park, A Belmond Hotel, Lima
Lima, Peru
At Huaca Pucllana, an adobe pyramid in the middle of Miraflores, the bricks are set upright, packed like books on a shelf, with enough play for the whole to move without falling when the earth shakes. In the historic centre, the colonial mansions built their upper floors in quincha, a wattle of cane and mud that bends in the same way, and hang long enclosed balconies of carved wood from them. Barranco lines up its painted republican houses along the cliff edge. The roofs are flat: it almost never rains in Lima, and winter brings only a grey drizzle, the garúa, which veils the sea for months on end.
