Gleneagles
Auchterarder, United Kingdom
The parish of Auchterarder once refused the minister its patron had presented; the courts found for the patron, and a few years later the Church of Scotland split over the question. The town has kept little rancour and a great deal of length: its weavers' houses, stone-walled and slate-roofed, line a high street so drawn out that it is known as the Lang Toun, the long town. Opposite, the green line of the Ochils. Out in the fields, the cruciform chapel of Tullibardine came through the Reformation almost untouched; one enters by the transept gable, beneath the arms of the Murrays.
