The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Princes Street Gardens occupy the bed of a drained loch, the Nor' Loch, which once guarded the foot of the rock. South of that hollow, the Old Town holds the ridge running down from the castle to Holyrood, its tenements of dark stone so tall that the lanes stay in shadow at noon. Opposite, the New Town laid out its streets at right angles and curved its terraces of pale sandstone into crescents. Dean Village, down below, keeps its old mills along the river. One arrives at Waverley, the station set at the bottom of the valley: Edinburgh is entered through the middle.
