Illes Balears, Spain
There is no flying into Formentera: the island has no airport, and it is reached by sea, over water that the posidonia keeps clear to the bottom. On Menorca, taulas, stone tables raised in a T, have stood in the middle of the fields since prehistory; in Mahón, the British left projecting windows along the harbour, still called boinders. Between the dry-stone walls, the field gates are cut from wild olive, its branches left to keep their curve.
