Cotton House
St Vincent and Grenadines
Moustique, the French called it, and the island has kept the name, less one letter. On the Atlantic side, Macaroni Beach takes the swell behind its reef; on the other, Britannia Bay shelters yachts in still water. The first houses on these scrub-covered slopes were entrusted to Oliver Messel, the stage designer, who drew them like sets seen from the sea: wooden colonnades and shutters, galleries open to the trade wind. On some walls he laid a bold yellow.
