Fairmont Le Montreux Palace
Montreux, Switzerland
The narcissus closed the season at Montreux in the Belle Époque: in May it whitens the meadows above the town so thoroughly that people speak of May snow, and its flowering was celebrated before the winter guests took the train home. The quays line up their ornate façades and cast-iron balconies facing the peaks of the Chablais. A rack railway leaves the station, calls at Glion and climbs to the Rochers de Naye, whose limestone holds the snow, the real kind, until spring. At Clarens, on the same shore, Stravinsky wrote much of The Rite of Spring.
