Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues
Geneva, Switzerland
Out of Geneva's harbour rises a block of granite, left there by a glacier: the Pierre du Niton, from which every altitude in the country is reckoned. Around it, the city keeps its lake in good order, down to the Jet d'Eau, which is switched off when the wind gets up. On the right bank, in Saint-Gervais, the watchmakers worked up under the roofs, in small rooms open to the light, and the name cabinotiers stayed with them. On the Promenade de la Treille, near the long wooden bench, the Sautier of the Republic watches each year for the first leaf of an official horse chestnut; it is he who declares spring open.
