In Taipei, the rubbish lorries come round in the late afternoon playing Für Elise, and everyone goes down to hand over their bag: the street keeps nothing. On Dihua Street, in Dadaocheng, the tea and herbal medicine merchants left façades of red brick and stucco. In Beitou, the thermal valley steams above pale green water, and the old public baths of the Japanese era set a wooden storey on a brick ground floor lit by stained glass. Above, in autumn, the slopes of Yangmingshan turn silver with miscanthus, and the fumaroles stain the ground with yellow sulphur.
