Royal Palms Resort and Spa
Phoenix, United States
Many of Phoenix's canals follow the lines of those dug by the Hohokam, who irrigated the Salt River valley centuries ago; from that network, found again beneath the dust, the town took its name, that of the bird that rises from its ashes. The Hohokam also carved spirals and figures into the dark rock of South Mountain. Further off, Camelback raises above the houses its granite hump and its head of red sandstone. In some of the older neighbourhoods along the Arizona Canal, a gate is still opened on the appointed day, and the water floods the lawns at the foot of the orange trees.
