In Texas, one drives for hours without leaving the state, and yet everything changes along the way. In Houston, moss-laden oaks shade streets where Rothko has his chapel. The Hill Country lines up its pale limestone hills, its rivers where one swims and its ranches behind wrought-iron gates. Far to the west, Marfa keeps, in former artillery sheds, rows of aluminium boxes that change colour with the hour, beneath a sky that takes up all the room. The country is taken in a pick-up, in boots, without irony or costume.
