Canyon Point, United States
Geologists speak of a grand staircase, a run of sandstone steps descending from the plateau towards the Grand Canyon, and Utah holds the top of it. Bryce is at the very top, its pink rock chimneys lined along the edge of the void. Zion, further down, tightens its white and red walls until the trail becomes the riverbed itself. To the south, the plateaus around Lake Powell open onto mesas where nothing moves but the shadow. In winter, the snow at Park City falls dry and light on the aspens, and in every season the silence carries as far as the eye.
