La Mamounia

The garden at La Mamounia predates the hotel by a century and a half: in the 18th century, Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah presented this orchard as a wedding gift to Prince Al Mamoun, whose name the house still bears. The hotel, built in the 1920s by Henri Prost and Antoine Marchisio, was renovated in 1946 with the help of the painter Jacques Majorelle. Churchill used to spend his winters there, setting up his easel from balcony to balcony to paint the Koutoubia. Today, a team of 70 gardeners tend the orange trees, white roses and vegetable patch of the original orchard.
