45 Park Lane

Facing verdant Hyde Park, a singular corner building rises. Attributed to the founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, and to a London practice, it reveals itself floor by floor like an Art Deco ocean liner. Step inside and a certain sophisticated modernism emerges: woodwork warms proportions of gigantic scale, immense shafts of radical light punctuate the place with a 1930s air, while soft leathers and drapery wrap you round. Every suite, without exception, looks out over the park: from elegant sofas trimmed in hide, you watch the sun go down over that canopy in the middle of the city. At CUT, you taste flavourful grass-fed Hereford beef, beneath Damien Hirst's Diamond Dust Psalms. And finally, twenty metres of pool welcome your morning laps, before you head back up for a steaming cup of tea and an English Breakfast.
