Amanwella

Tangalla, Sri Lanka

Amanwella

Emerging from the jungle on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, only fragments of the Amanwella roof are visible, so naturally does it blend into the horizon. Each space, opening out onto the ocean or a coconut plantation, allows the sounds of the surroundings to resonate, as the boundaries between indoors and outdoors blur to the rustling of palm fronds and the lapping of waves. Set against the surrounding tropics, the architecture showcases raw materials like stone and wood, blending shades of beige, cream and terracotta with the deep green of the vegetation. With the mind at rest, the eye can take in what lies before it, in its most elemental form. The culinary palette encompasses all the colours of a bountiful sea and fertile land, brought to life by curried dishes with ancestral roots.
