Amanwella
Tangalla, Sri Lanka
Above the coconut groves of Tangalle, the toddy tappers go from tree to tree without coming down, along two coir ropes strung between the crowns, one for the feet, the other for the hands. On the coast, dark rocks divide a run of coves where outrigger canoes are hauled up; the Rekawa lagoon closes behind its sandbar, among the mangroves. Inland, the rock of Mulkirigala carries, at the top of a long stairway, caves where reclining Buddhas fill the whole wall. The sap, gathered in clay pots, will have fermented by evening.
