Amanyangyun

Amanyangyun

On the outskirts of Shanghai, a truly unique enclave has emerged, comprising some 50 dwellings dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties, reimagined in contemporary style. Amidst the camphor trees, teahouses and art galleries dedicated to preserving manual arts like calligraphy and painting, the 35 rooms, crafted from nanmu wood and black stone, form part of this approach to interpreting ancestral traditions. The interiors are minimalist and cosy, allowing visitors to relax in an atmosphere of serenity. Five restaurants serve cosmopolitan cuisine (including Italian, Cantonese- and Jiangxi-inspired Chinese), offering a gourmet reflection of the identity of the megacity nearby. To complete the immersion, a boat trip as black swans glide by on the nearby lake, followed by a Chinese-style tea ceremony, will blur the boundaries between eras.
