Perched atop a limestone cliff 150 metres above the Indian Ocean, the property occupies one of the highest points on the Bukit Peninsula. A funicular takes guests down to the beach, in a brief journey offering views of lush vegetation before arriving at waters the colour of turquoise gems. Nature itself provided the architects with the materials for the site: volcanic stone for exterior walls; mahogany and ironwood for floors, terraces, and structural framing; and thatch for the roofs. Living and relaxation areas share this philosophy, illuminating the Balinese landscape with Italian touches, as sleek furniture sits alongside silks woven with gold and silver thread, while imposing rooster cages have been reimagined as light fixtures. While Niko Romito’s restaurant celebrates Italian cuisine by highlighting local ingredients, guests can embark on a different kind of culinary journey at Sangkar, where dishes pay tribute to regional specialities from across the archipelago, spanning Java, Bali, Lombok, and Borneo.
