Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li

Nestled in the Xuhui district, this residence humbly reimagines traditional Shikumen dwellings, as the contemporary embraces the contours of history. Architect Jaya Ibrahim plays with chinoiserie and Western design codes, blending eras in dark wood floors that meet Art Deco motifs, fine woodwork, and mouldings with Parisian touches. The 55 rooms and suites offer a welcome, understated contrast, with each spanning three floors to include a living area, a dedicated space for rest and sleep, and a terrace. Multi-Michelin-starred chef Pierre Gagnaire curates a menu in perfect harmony with the surroundings, drawing on the region's inspiring local produce within a cosmopolitan brasserie setting.
