Castel Badia
For centuries, Castel Badia has watched over the Rienza valley from its rocky perch. What began as a fortress in the eleventh century later became a Benedictine convent; today, those two histories meet in a place where very little has been erased. Original frescoes still run across the ceilings; old plaster and stone have been left visible, while timber cabinetry, floral fabrics and contemporary glazing bring a distinctly Tyrolean warmth to the old rooms. In the suites, some tucked into the turrets and others within the main building, high ceilings and historic details are softened by wood panelling, generous fabrics and piles of blankets and cushions. The effect is intimate rather than grand; a castle, certainly, but one that feels lived in. The gardens tell another part of the story. Seventeen of them surround the castle, including an apothecary garden filled with Alpine herbs that make their way from the soil to the kitchen. At Stube Badia, traditional Tyrolean dishes are treated with a lighter hand and a close eye on local produce -- beef cheek with ancient-grain polenta is one of the signatures. Even the spa remains connected to what came before. Set partly beneath the old castle, its treatments draw on Alpine herbs and the medicinal traditions once practised here by the Benedictine nuns.
